Every person on this planet has a dominating thought process, communication style, and mindset. They can include (but are not limited to) aggressive, passive, physiological, fluid, comprehensive, technical, analytical, theoretical, mechanical, assertive, abstract, and more. This article looks at abstract and technical mindsets.

1) Abstract - which is (usually but not limited to) vague, broad, open ended, and can offer more of an overview.

2) Technical - which is (usually but not limited to) concise, precise, direct, and well organized.

A person can have more than one type of mindset, but one usually dominates over the others. It may develop by one’s experiences, environment, surroundings, social circles, education, and interests.

One who has more of an abstract mind may be someone who is known to be artsy, creative, holistic, storyteller, a dreamer, intuitive, and right brained. This type of person is in tune with their emotions, much a “feelings” person, and dominated by their feminine. They may also be known as a wanderlust, free bird, or someone living amongst the clouds.

One who is abstract can be very open-ended. They may ask “why” and ponder life’s greatest questions like “Why do humans exist?”. They look for understanding through communication even if it doesn’t come up with a concrete solution to a conversation or problem. They use words like “I think”, “I feel”, and “I wonder”. Abstract thinkers commonly work in creative fields like teaching, marketing, and product development, and are known to come up with lots of ideas and strategies.

One who has more of a technical mind may be someone who is known to be short spoken, direct, mechanical, logical, linear, atomistic, and left brained. This type of person leads with facts. They can take their emotions out of conversation to understand the reality of a situation and are dominated by their masculine. They may also be known as an analyst, realist, or someone who is very grounded.

When a technical communicator speaks it can be very clear cut. They may ask or think more so about the how. They look for understanding through processes looking for a concrete solution to a conversation or problem. They don’t often speak using “I feel” sentences related to their emotions, but rather use speech that is direct and facts without emotional ties. Sometimes using words like process, develop, pattern, or other technical jargon. Technical thinkers commonly work in science, accounting, or engineering and other categories of work that help find definite solutions to problems large and small.

Both styles of human have their positives and negatives. Like many aspects of life, it’s about slowing down, learning, and understanding. When these two types of minds interact in the workplace, it can offer the building blocks for something amazing to be developed (think I-phone, Google, YouTube). On a more personal level when it comes to social circles or deeper relationships, varying types of mindsets and personalities can get a bit more complicated but as Virgil said, “Love conquers all things.” It just can take time and patience.

What type of mindset or communication style do you have? Are there any other styles you’d like to learn more about? Drop me a message and let me know.
